My Dictionaries
How can I view my dictionaries list?
- In your Babylon go to: Configuration -> Languages & Dictionaries -> Manage Dictionaries.
In this tab, you will be able to view all the dictionaries that you current have either installed (online and offline access) or available online (require Internet connection).
If the specific dictionary you want does not appear in the list, simply download it from one the following links:
If you have an older version of Babylon:
Version 4: click on the client's My List button.
Version 5: Menu -> Glossaries -> Glossary Options.

What do 'Target Languages' define?
- A list of Result langauges appear in the Languages & Dictionaries tab. Selecting languages from this list will instruct your Babylon to:
- Search for online results in the selected languages,
- Enable Smart Dictionary translations between the selected lanugages.

What is the difference between online and offline dictionaries?
- Offline dictionaries do not need an internent connection, online dictionaries do.
Babylon dictionaries work online and offline, The online only services are the "Smart Dictionaries", "Text Translation" and "Wikipedia dictionaries".
In order to work offline, you must download and install the needed dictionaries/glossaries.

In order to check the status (online or offline) of existing glossaries, click on My Dictionaries link in your side bar. The My Dictionaries tab will open, and you will see that it is divided into two categories:
- Installed Dictionaries on top, in which all downloaded dictionaries and glossaries will appear, and
- Online Dictionaries (Require Internet Connection) in which all online dictionaries and glossaries will appear.
If you wish to download any of the online dictionaries you see there, click on it to highlight it, and then click the Download button at the upper frame.

Do I need an Internet connection to get translations?
- Babylon can access translations both online and offline.
In order to work offline, you must download and install the desired dictionary.
In order to work online, you must subscribe to the desired dictionary.
Versions 5, 6, 7 and 8
In order to check the status (online or offline) of existing glossaries, please click on Languages & Dictionaries in version 8, or My Dictionaries in versions 6 and 7, or Glossary Options in version 5, in your side bar.
The Languages & Dictionaries / My Dictionary / Glossary Options tab will open, and you will see that it is divided into two categories:
Installed Dictionaries / Glossaries on top, in which all downloaded glossaries will appear, and
Online Dictinoary / Glossaries in which all your online glossaries will appear. You can download these glossaries by highlighting them, and clicking the Download button.
Please note that some dictionaries are available only for online use.
If you have an older version of Babylon:
Version 4
In the My List tab, only locally installed dictionaries will be written in bold fonts. You can right click on online glossaries, and choose ‘download'.

I am online, but am not getting any online translations.
- Please check the following:
- Are any of your Online Dictionaries active? For a dictionary to be active, the check box next to its name must be checked.
- Is the word you entered spelled correctly? If not, Babylon will not be able to yield a translation.
- Also, make sure that your Firewall permits Babylon to connect to the internet to retrieve results.

Where can I download dictionaries?
- To quickly and easily find and download dictionaries, please go to the add dictionaries page on Babylon's site.

How do I add online results in more languages?
- In order to get online results from specific languages, click on Configuration -> Languages & Dictionaries.
At the bottom of the tab, there is a list of Result Languages.
These are the languages Babylon will search in online results.

Why am I not getting a result from a dictionary?
- This can occur for several reasons;
- You don't have the relevant dictionary in your dictionaries list
- The dictionary exits in you dictionaries list but is unchecked
- The dictionary is categorized as an Online Dictionary, and you are currently offline. To view results from this dictionary you need to connect to the Internet.

Why am I NOT getting results from the Premier Publisher's Dictionary that I purchased?
- If you chose the "automatically install license on this computer" option during your purchase process, then the dictionary was automatically added as an Online Dictionary In this case, you must be connected to the internet to get translation.
To get results when you are offline please download and install the specific dictionary title from Babylon's website.
If you did not choose the automatic installation option, please make sure that you entered your license details (user name and license code).
If you did not enter your license details you need to do so now. The details appear in the purchase confirmation email that was sent to the email that you specified.
Once you have entered your license details, you will be asked if you want to install the dictionary locally to your hard drive (available for offline use), or to add it to your online dictionaries (requires an Internet connection).

I purchased a Premier Publisher's Dictionary. Why is it categorized as an 'Online Dictionary'?
- In order to make your download process easier and faster and to save disk space on your hard drive, the premier publisher's dictionary you purchased was added as an online dictionary.
If you wish to download this dictionary locally (available offline as well), download and install the specific dictionary title from Babylon's website.

Why am I getting expiry messages from dictionaries?
- Babylon offers you results from dictionaries and encyclopedias from the world's premier publishers. These dictionaries have a 7 days trial period.
After the trial period has ended you need to purchase a license to continue viewing results from the desired dictionaries.
If you have purchased a Premier Publisher's Dictionary - you are required to enter the license details into your Babylon.
If you did not purchase a Premier Publisher's Dictionary, at the end of 7 days of trial period, Babylon will notify you that the trial period has ended and a Purchase/Remove message will be displayed.
When the trial period is over, a remove link will appear. Click it in order to remove this dictionary.

How does the Smart Dictionary work?
- The Smart Dictionary automatically generates results based on the Target Languages you selected in the My Dictionaries menu. English is always used as the pivot (intermediary) language.
When a direct translation Babylon dictionary is not available, as for example, Chinese to German, Babylon delivers results from existing online dictionaries (e.g., Chinese to English and German to English), and then presents a Smart Dictionary result for Chinese to German.

Can I add Smart Dictionary to My Dictionaries list?
- Yes. Click on the favorites star on the right side of the Smart Dictionary title bar in the Results pane. The dictionary will now be listed under Online Dictionaries in the Manage Dictionaries dialog box.

How do I set the results order in the Babylon window?
- Just click on Configuration -> Languages & Dictionaries -> Manage Dictionaries.
Change the order in which results are displayed by using the up and down arrows on the upper window frame.
If you have an older version of Babylon:
Version 5: Click on Menu -> Glossaries -> Glossary Options, or click the Glossary Options link on your sidebar.
Version 4: Open your My List tab, where you can drag and drop the glossaries into place. A higher glossary will display a result first.
Change the order in which results are displayed by using the up and down arrows on the right window frame.

Is it possible to correct an existing definition or add a new one to the dictionaries?
- Versions 8, 7, 6 and 5
If you wish to suggest new terms or correct existing definitions in a dictionary, you can do so in one of the following ways:
1. Click on the dictionary name in the results screen, then choose "about [the dictionary's name] -> Send suggestions to author '' - Babylon will open an online web browser, which will give you the option to suggest a word. Please fill in the relevant fields and click "submit".
2. Go to "Languages & Dictionaries" in V8, or "My Dictionaries" in V6 and V7, or "Glossary options" in V5 , by clicking the link at the Babylon side bar. Choose the relevant dictionary title, click "More Details...", then choose "about [the dictionary's name] -> Send suggestions to author ''- Babylon will open an online web browser, which will give you the option to suggest a word. Please fill in the relevant fields and click "submit".
Version 4
If this glossary is one of Babylon's propriety dictionaries (i.e. written by Babylon's linguistic team), see list, then you need to send an email directly to Babylon's Linguistic team.
If you wish suggest new terms or correct existing definitions in user-written dictionaries you need to contact the dictionary author directly. To do so click on the specific title in the results window and choosing the option "Write to Glossary Builder". Selecting this option will bring you to the specific title's page on the Babylon website where the author's email is specified.

Can I see the list of words in a dictionary?
- Yes - In our web site, each dictionaries description will display the dictionaries contents.
For example, the Babylon English-English. In addition, each term can be then translated, like in this example.
