zither

The zither is a musical string instrument, mainly used in folk music, most commonly in German-speaking Alpine Europe and East Asian cultures. Like many other stringed instruments, acoustic and electric forms exist; in the acoustic version, the strings are stretched across the length of the soundbox, and neither version has a neck. They can be divided into two classes, the fretted ("concert") zithers and fretless zithers. A musician that plays them is called zitherist or zither player.

De citer of zither (niet te verwarren met het Indiase snaarinstrument Sitar) is een snaarinstrument, dat voornamelijk bestaat uit een klankbodem die bespannen is met snaren. Het instrument wordt voornamelijk gebruikt in het Duitstalige deel van Europa bij volksmuziekevenementen.De term zither wordt tevens gebruikt om de instrumentengroep zitherachtigen aan te duiden.
