zeta potential

Zeta potential is abbreviation for electrokinetic potential. It is usually denoted in literature as ζ-potential. From theoretical viewpoint it is electric potential in the interfacial Double layer (DL) at the location of the slipping plane. Zeta potential is not measurable directly but it can be calculated using appropriate theory from electrophoretic mobility and dynamic electrophoretic mobility. For this reason it is widely used for estimating degree of Double layer charge. This would require assumption that Zeta potential equals to the Stern potential or electric surface potential in the Double layer. These assuptions should be applied with some caution. However, usually it is the only one available path for charaterizing DL properties.
