Zealotry was originally a political movement in 1st century Second Temple Judaism which sought to incite the people of Iudaea Province to rebel against the Roman Empire and expel it from the Holy land by force of arms, most notably during the Great Jewish Revolt (66-70). Zealotry was described by Josephus as one of the "four sects" at this time. The zealots have been described as one of the first examples of the use of terrorism.

Der Ausdruck Zelot, (vom Griechischen: ζηλωτής zelotes = der Eiferer, hebräisch kanai קנאי) leitet sich von der biblischen Gestalt Pinhas dem Zeloten, dem Enkel Aarons, ab, der mit dem Speer in der Hand „für seinen Gott eiferte“, indem er einem anderen Israeliten, der sich mit einer „fremden“ Frau eingelassen hatte, in dessen Zelt folgte und ihn und die Frau mit dem Speer durchbohrte (4. Buch Mose, 25).

Les zélotes (ou zélés, Qiniim en hébreu, de qina, jaloux, exclusif, sur la racine QYN, Caïn), sont les groupes qui combattent le pouvoir romain les armes à la main pendant la Première guerre judéo-romaine. Révoltés au départ contre le recensement de Quirinius, qui permet l'impôt « par tête », ils se radicalisent et finissent par s'attaquer aussi bien à leurs compatriotes jugés timorés ou soupçonnés de collaborer avec les Romains, qu'aux païens qui - pensent-ils - souillent la Terre promise par leur seule présence.

Zeloci (gr. ζηλωται - gorliwi., hebr. קנאים - kannaim - gorliwi) Ugrupowanie polityczno-religijne w rzymskiej Palestynie. Stawiali sobie za cel walkę z Rzymianami oraz Żydami, którzy kolaborowali z okupantem. Stronnictwo uformowało się w północnej Galilei. Na jego czele stał Ezechiasz i jego synowie. Byli zdania że poddanie się niewoli oznacza zaparcie się Boga - jedynego Pana. Wierzyli również, że przez walkę przyspieszą przyjście mesjasza.
