Valediction
A valediction, according to Merriam-Webster's, is "an act of bidding farewell." It is any word or words used to say goodbye. The word comes from the Latin vale, meaning "fare you well", and dictio, roughly meaning "saying" or "something said". Often, valediction is used in English to refer to a complimentary closing, which is a courteous formula used to end a letter. This is normally a phrase which concludes by formulaically expressing the writer's loyalty or best wishes to the recipient, and preceding the writer's name. However, valediction may mean any word or phrase used to say goodbye, such as the word "goodbye" itself, or a longer phrase, or even a whole speech.
