Wrestling is the act of physical engagement between two unarmed persons, in which each wrestler strives to get an advantage over or control of their opponent. Physical techniques which embody the style of wrestling are clinching, holding, locking, and leverage. Avoiding potentially lethal techniques, wrestling has aspects of ritual fighting, but its basic principles are closely related to those of military hand-to-hand combat or self-defence systems. Many styles of wrestling are known all over the world and have long histories, and sport wrestling (particularly amateur wrestling) has been an Olympic sport for over 100 years.

La lutte est une discipline sportive et un sport de combat existant depuis des millénaires. Il en existe un très grand nombre de variétés mais on peut en distinguer trois majeures : la lutte libre (LL), la lutte gréco-romaine (GR) et la lutte féminine.

Ringen ist ein Kraftsport mit Ganzkörpereinsatz ohne weitere Hilfsmittel. Bei den  Olympischen Spielen der Antike gehörte Pale (Ringkampf) zu den Disziplinen des Fünfkampfs, war aber auch Einzeldisziplin. Seit Beginn der Olympischen Spiele der Neuzeit, 1896, gehört Ringen zum olympischen Programm. Seit den Olympischen Spiele 2004 ist es auch olympische Disziplin für Frauen (jedoch nicht in der Stilart Greco). Seit 1950 werden jährlich die offiziellen Weltmeisterschaften veranstaltet, mit Ausnahme der Jahre, in denen Olympische Sommerspiele stattfinden.

Wrestling (engl. Ringen), im deutschen Sprachraum auch als Catchen bezeichnet (letztere Bezeichnung lehnt sich an den älteren Begriff an), ist eine populäre Show-Sportart, die besonders in Japan, den USA und Mexiko eine große Fangemeinde hat. Wrestling ist nicht ungefährlich – trotz des Showcharakters können Verletzungen bei den Akteuren auftreten.

Wrestling, lub dokładniej wrestling zawodowy (ang. professional wrestling) to forma zapasów popularna głównie w USA, Wielkiej Brytanii i Japonii. Zamiast maty zawodnicy walczą w ringu. Ring z reguły jest kwadratowy, ale bywają federacje, które stosują ring sześciokątny (TNA). Jest to jeden z niewielu sportów, gdzie rozrywka i "show" biorą górę nad prawdziwą rywalizacją. Walki są często wzbogacane z myślą o jak największym widowisku, jednak pomimo pewnych ustalonych akcji walczący ze sobą przeciwnicy mogą narażać się na poważne kontuzje. Zdarzają się również krwawe walki w których zawodnicy niejednokrotnie doznają uszczerbków na zdrowiu.

Wrestling è un termine inglese traducibile in lingua italiana con il termine lotta. In Italia viene utilizzato come riferimento esclusivo alla lotta di tipo spettacolare, chiamata negli Stati Uniti professional wrestling (o pro wrestling) per distinguerla dall'amateur wrestling, ovvero l'insieme di quelle discipline che si riferiscono alla lotta sportiva, come la lotta greco-romana o la lotta libera. Se nell'amateur wrestling i contendenti sono due sportivi non professionisti che si preoccupano solamente di prevalere l'uno sull'altro, nel pro wrestling i protagonisti sono due o più atleti che cercano di ampliare la sfera della pura competizione offrendo agli spettatori una vasta gamma di azioni spettacolari, spesso oltre il limite del lecito; inoltre il risultato di ogni match è predeterminato. In aggiunta quindi alle ovvie connotazioni sportivo-agonistiche, il pro wrestling ha dunque come obiettivo predominante quello di intrattenere il pubblico.
