Etymology: The PIE root *wen- "desire, strive for" developed in several different directions. In English it became "win" (German gewinnen) and "wean," which originally meant "to accustom, train." In Latin it became the name of the goddess of love, Venus, whence venenum "love potion," shortened by English to "venom." (Is there a lesson here?) Venial "minor, forgivable," as in "venial sin," derives from Latin venia "forgiveness," another kind of love. Latin venerabilis "worshipped, venerated" comes from veneror "adore, revere," also related to "Venus." Finally, this root became Latin venari "to hunt," whence the English word "venison." stâyeš/prasteš-âmiz/ bar-angiz
