WOOD
Wood
Wood is a hard, fibrous tissue found in many trees. It has been used for hundreds of thousands of years for both fuel and as a construction material. It is an organic material, a natural composite of cellulose fibers (which are strong in tension) embedded in a of lignin which resists compression. Wood is sometimes defined as only the secondary xylem in the stems of trees, or it is defined more broadly to include the same type of tissue elsewhere such as in tree roots or in other plants such as shrubs. In a living tree it performs a support function, enabling woody plants to grow large or to stand up for themselves. It also mediates the transfer of water and nutrients to the leaves and other growing tissues. Wood may also refer to other plant materials with comparable properties, and to material engineered from wood, or wood chips or fiber.

Holz
Holz (von germanisch *holta, aus idg. *kl̩tˀo) bezeichnet im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch das feste bzw. harte Gewebe der Sprossachsen (Stamm, Äste und Zweige) von Bäumen und Sträuchern. Botanisch wird Holz als das vom Kambium erzeugte sekundäre Xylem der Samenpflanzen definiert. Nach dieser Definition sind die holzigen Gewebe der Palmen und anderer höherer Pflanzen allerdings kein Holz im engeren Sinn. Kennzeichnend ist aber auch hier die Einlagerung von Lignin in die Zellwand. In einer weitergehenden Definition wird Holz daher auch als lignifiziertes (verholztes) pflanzliches Gewebe begriffen. Kulturhistorisch gesehen zählen Gehölze wohl zu den ältesten genutzten Pflanzen. Als vielseitiger, insbesondere aber nachwachsender Rohstoff stellt Holz bis heute eines der wichtigsten Pflanzenprodukte dar.

Bois
Le bois est un tissu végétal (le xylème) qui joue un double rôle chez les plantes vasculaires : conducteur de la sève brute et tissu de soutien qui donne leur résistance aux tiges. Il sert aussi parfois de tissu de réserve.

Drewno (technika)
Drewno – surowiec drzewny otrzymywany ze ściętych drzew i formowany przez obróbkę w różnego rodzaju sortymenty. Zajmuje przestrzeń pomiędzy rdzeniem, a warstwą łyka i kory.
Drewno należy do najstarszych materiałów używanych przez człowieka. W Polsce, w grodzie Biskupin wszystkie domy, urządzenia obronne i wiele przedmiotów wyposażenia i codziennego użytku było wykonane z drewna. Przez tysiąclecia budowano z drewna ściany, stropy i dachy. Drewna używano do wykonania narzędzi, naczyń a także do ogrzewania i oświetlania pomieszczeń (łuczywo).
