It has been used to construct telephone exchanges, computers, control consoles, radios, radars, sonars, and other complex pieces of equipment that are needed in small volumes; the Apollo Guidance Computer, among many other historically relevant computers, was constructed using wire wrap technology.

Le wrapping est une technique de connectique électrotechnique permettant de remplacer les soudures et les connexions standard pour produire des circuits complexes en petit nombre. C’est une technique alternative à l’utilisation de petits assemblages de circuit imprimé. Elle possède l’avantage d’être facile à défaire, en particulier lors de la création de prototypes. Cette technique est très utilisée pour la fabrication et le raccordement des commutateurs téléphoniques, d’ordinateurs, de consoles de contrôle, de radios, de radars, de sonars et autres équipements complexes qui n’ont besoin d’être produits qu’en petit nombre. Par exemple, l’ordinateur de navigation de la fusée Apollo a été construit en wrapping.

Der Begriff Wickelverbindung oder Wickeltechnik (auch Drahtwickelverbindung, Drahtumwicklung; engl. wire-wrap connection oder wrapped joint) bezeichnet eine Verbindungstechnik, die u. a. bei elektronischen Baugruppen (hauptsächlich in der  Nachrichtentechnik) verwendet wird. Dabei werden Einzeladern aus Volldraht (Leiterdurchmessern zwischen 0,2 und 0,8 mm) mit einem meist motorisch angetriebenen Wickeldorn (Elektro-Handwerkzeug, Wickelpistole) um einen scharfkantigen, quadratischen oder rechteckigen Stift gewickelt. Der hohe Anpressdruck sorgt an den Stiftecken durch Kaltverschweißung für oxidfreie, gasdichte Kontaktstellen. Es sind mindestens vier Windungen für eine einwandfreie Verbindung erforderlich. Als Stiftabmessungen (Grundfläche) sind 1×1 mm² bis 0,6×0,6 mm² üblich. Die Stiftlänge ist meist für zwei bis drei Wickel (also zwei bis drei Adern) übereinander bemessen und beträgt bis 50 mm. Üblich ist, dass zu Beginn zwei Windungen  isolierten Drahtes mit um den Stift gewickelt wird, ehe das blanke Kupfer kommt. Das hat den Grund, dass mechanische Erschütterungen abgefedert werden und der Draht bei Schwingungsbelastung nicht bricht.

Wire-wrap is een aansluitmethode die vooral op connectoren uitgevoerd wordt of voor het bouwen van prototypes van elektronische schakelingen. Ook wordt deze aansluitmethode veel gebruikt voor het verbinden van kabeladers op printplaten van telefooncentrales. De connector of ander aansluitstuk, bijv. een voet voor een IC is voorzien van vierkante aansluitpinnen, van ongeveer 0,5 x 0,5 millimeter.
