Windsurfing or sailboarding is a surface water sport that combines elements of surfing and sailing. It consists of a board usually two to four metres long, powered by wind on a sail. The rig is connected to the board by a free-rotating universal joint and comprises a mast, wishbone boom and sail. The sail area ranges from less than 2.5 m² to more than 12 m² depending on the conditions, the skill of the sailor and the type of windsurfing being undertaken.

Windsurfen (früher auch Brettsegeln oder Stehsegeln genannt) ist eine Wassersportart, bei der man, auf einem Surfbrett stehend, ein Segel zur Fortbewegung nutzt. Das Segel ist freibeweglich mit dem Brett verbunden, was spektakuläre Manöver und Tricks ermöglicht. Die in den USA entwickelte Sportart wurde zur Trendsportart und hat sich weltweit etabliert.

La planche à voile (windsurf en anglais) est un engin flottant constitué d'un flotteur propulsé par une voile libre. On entend par voile libre un mât monté sur rotule (pied de mât) qui ne reste pas dans une position fixe pendant la navigation.

Windsurfing – sport wodny, uprawiany przy użyciu deski i przymocowanego do niej elastycznie pędnika żaglowego. Sport polegający na żeglowaniu podobnym do jachtowego, lecz przy pomocy innego sprzętu. Deski o wyporności od 60-70 do ponad 300 litrów, dzielimy na mieczowe i bezmieczowe (o szerokości dochodzącej nawet do 101 cm, tzw. wide-body lub flapery). Pędnik stanowi zespół masztu, bomu oraz żagla o różnej powierzchni (stosuje się różne żagle dla odpowiedniej siły wiatru oraz umiejętności i postury zawodnika, od 0,5 do 12,5 m²). Do połączenia deski z żaglem stosuje się przeguby gumowe. Za twórców windsurfingu uważa się dwóch Kalifornijczyków: Hoyla Schweitzera oraz Jima Drake'a.
