The four species of wild rice compose the genus Zizania (common names: Canada rice, Indian rice, and water oats), a group of grasses that grow in shallow water in small lakes and slow-flowing streams. Often, only the flowering head of wild rice rises above the water. True rice, genus Oryza, is also a grass; the two genera Oryza and Zizania are closely related, sharing the tribe Oryzeae. Three species of wild rice are native to North America:Northern wild rice (Zizania palustris) is an annual plant native to the Great Lakes region of North America. Northern wild rice is the state grain of the U.S. state of Minnesota.Wild rice (Z. aquatica), also an annual, grows in the Saint Lawrence River and on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. Texas wild rice (Z. texana) is a perennial plant only found in a small area along the San Marcos River in central Texas. and one species is native to Asia:Manchurian wild rice (Z. latifolia; incorrect synonym: Z. caduciflora), is a perennial native to China.

La zizanie (Zizania L.) est un genre de graminées (Poaceae), auquel sont rattachées les quatre espèces connues de riz sauvage. Ce sont des plantes aquatiques qui croissent dans les eaux peu profondes et calmes des lacs, des étangs et des cours d'eau tranquilles. Le plus souvent, seuls les épis de riz sauvage émergent de l'eau.

Der Wasserreis (Zizania) bezeichnet eine Pflanzengattung der Süßgräser (Poaceae). Die Grasarten gehören zwar in den Verwandschaftskreis des Reises (Oryza) innerhalb der Unterfamilie der Ehrhartoideae, stellen aber keine Wildformen desselben dar, obgleich die Früchte einiger Arten wie Reiskörner verwendet werden. Zuchtformen von Z. palustris (Syn. Z. aquatica var. angustifolia) sind unter den Namen „Wildreis“, „Indianerreis“ oder „Kanadischer Reis“ im Handel erhältlich. Der Gattungsname ist griechischen Ursprungs von zizánion = im Wasser wachsend und nimmt auf den Wuchsort der Gräser Bezug. Sie wachsen oft bestandsbildend an Fluss-, See- und Teichufern in Nordamerika und Ostasien.

Zizania é um género botânico pertencente à família  Poaceae.O gênero Zizânia é composto de quatro espécies, chamadas popularmente de arroz selvagem, pertencentes ao grupo das gramíneas, que vicejam em águas rasas de lagos e brejos. Freqüentemente, apenas a espiga aparece fora d'agua. O arroz verdadeiro (gênero Oryza), também é uma gramínea e as duas espécies são aparentadas, dividindo a tribo Oryzeae.
