Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, a highly contagious disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis; it derived its name from a characteristic severe hacking cough followed by a high-pitched intake of breath that sounds like "whoop"; a similar, milder disease is caused by B. parapertussis. Worldwide, there are 30–50 million pertussis cases and about 300,000 deaths per year. Despite generally high coverage with the DTP and DTaP vaccines, pertussis is one of the leading causes of vaccine-preventable deaths world-wide. Most deaths occur in young infants who are either unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated; three doses of the vaccine are necessary for complete protection against pertussis. Ninety percent of all cases occur in the developing world. However, in the winter of 2006, a New York school district [1] suffered a large pertussis outbreak with thirteen plus students falling victim to the infection. [2] Also in the fall of 2006, a pertussis outbreak struck New Trier High School, a public school in Winnetka, Illinois, with twenty-four high school students catching the disease. In response, the Cook County Department of Public Health provided vaccine, free of charge, to eligible students.

La coqueluche est une infection respiratoire bactérienne peu ou pas fébrile de l'arbre respiratoire inférieur, mais d'évolution longue et hautement contagieuse. Deux bactéries du genre des Bordetella sont responsables des syndromes coquelucheux chez l'homme : Bordetella pertussis et Bordetella parapertussis. C’est une maladie longue (quatre à huit semaines) (après une période d'incubation d'une semaine) et éprouvante (caractérisée par de violentes quintes de toux dont le paroxysme évoque le chant du coq).

Keuchhusten (auch Pertussis, volkstümlich Stickhusten) ist eine durch das Bakterium Bordetella pertussis, seltener durch Bordetella parapertussis ausgelöste hochansteckende Infektionskrankheit. Nach einem unspezifischen Anfangsstadium verläuft sie regelhaft über mehrere Wochen. Nach einem uncharakteristischen Beginn mit erkältungsartigem Husten, das Stadium catarrhale genannt wird, treten im Stadium convulsivum anfallsartig typische stakkatoartige Hustenattacken auf. Bei Säuglingen können sich die Hustenanfälle untypisch als Atemstillstände äußern und somit lebensbedrohlich verlaufen. Schließlich nehmen die Hustenattacken an Zahl und Schwere im Stadium decrementi allmählich ab. Eine ursächliche Therapie ist nur im Anfangsstadium möglich. Zur Prophylaxe existiert eine allgemein empfohlene wirksame Impfung. In Deutschland besteht eine Meldepflicht im Todesfall.

Przebycie krztuśca pozostawia trwałą odporność.Dawniej choroba często kończyła się śmiercią, obecnie praktycznie nie występuje dzięki szczepieniom ochronnym (w Polsce stosowane są szczepienia szczepionkami skojarzonymi Di-Per-Te, które służą także do uodparniania przeciw błonicy i tężcowi).W jej przebiegu występuje podobnie jak w przypadku cholery do zaburzenia w przekazywaniu sygnału do komórki, który odbywa się przy udziale receptora metabotropowego i białka G. Toksyna krztuścowa produkowana przez pałeczki krztuśca zmienia aktywność podjednostki Gαi Ta modyfikacja powoduje niemożność zahamowania czynności cyklazy adenylowej. Dokładny mechanizm na drodze którego występują objawy krztuśca nie jest znany.

Kinkhoest of pertussis is een infectieziekte van de luchtwegen die wordt veroorzaakt door een bacterie, Bordetella pertussis (bacil van Bordet-Gengou), die vooral wordt overgebracht door de druppeltjes die bij hoesten ontstaan. Kinkhoest is zeer besmettelijk.
