White blood cells or leukocytes are cells of the immune system which defend the body against both infectious disease and foreign materials. Several different and diverse types of leukocytes exist, but they are all produced and derived from a multipotent cell in the bone marrow known as a hematopoietic stem cell. Leukocytes are found throughout the body, including the blood and lymphatic system.

Als Leukozyten, abgekürzt Leu, zu deutsch weiße Blutkörperchen (von griechisch λευκός leukos "leuchtend", "weiss"; κυτός kytos "Gefäß, Hülle") bezeichnet man bestimmte Zellen des Körpers, die im Blut, im Knochenmark, in den lymphatischen Organen und anderen Körpergeweben zu finden sind. Morphologisch werden sie den Erythrozyten (roten Blutkörperchen) gegenübergestellt, da sie im Gegensatz zu diesen nicht den roten Farbstoff Hämoglobin beinhalten. Leukozyten erfüllen spezielle Aufgaben in der Abwehr von Krankheitserregern und körperfremden Strukturen. Sie gehören zum Immunsystem und sind dort Teil der spezifischen und unspezifischen Immunabwehr.

Leukocyt - inaczej krwinka biała – komórkowy składnik krwi. Leukocyty są stosunkowo duże, niemal bezbarwne i mniej liczne od erytrocytów. Ich zadaniem jest ochrona organizmu przed patogenami takimi jak wirusy i bakterie.

La funzione principale dei leucociti è quella di preservare l'integrità biologica dell'organismo tramite l'attuazione di meccanismi di difesa diretti contro microorganismi patogeni di varia natura (virus, batteri, miceti, parassiti) e contro corpi estranei penetrati nell'organismo previo superamento delle barriere costituite dalla cute e dalle mucose.
