The term quality of life is used to evaluate the general well-being of individuals and societies. The term is used in a wide range of contexts, including the fields of international development, healthcare, and politics. Quality of life should not be confused with the concept of standard of living, which is based primarily on income. Instead, standard indicators of the quality of life include not only wealth and employment, but also the built environment, physical and mental health, education, recreation and leisure time, and social belonging.

Mit dem Begriff Lebensqualität werden üblicherweise die Faktoren bezeichnet, die die Lebensbedingungen in einer Gesellschaft beziehungsweise für deren Individuen ausmachen. Im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch wird mit Qualität des Lebens vorwiegend der Grad des Wohlbefindens eines Menschen oder einer Gruppe von Menschen beschrieben. Ein Faktor ist der materielle Wohlstand, daneben gibt es aber eine Reihe weiterer Faktoren wie Bildung, Berufschancen, sozialer Status, Gesundheit, Natur und andere.

La qualité de vie d’une population est un enjeu majeur en sciences économiques et en science politique. On utilise les notions proches d’utilité et de bien-être. Elle est mesurée par de nombreux indicateurs socio-économiques (l’indice de développement humain (IDH) par exemple). Elle dépend dans une large partie de la capacité à acheter des biens et services (notion de pouvoir d'achat), mais aussi des situations dans les domaines de la liberté (libéralisme économique), de respect des droits de l'homme, de bonheur, de santé, etc.

Livskvalitet är den upplevda känslan av att leva ett gott liv. Det är en subjektiv upplevelse som skiljer sig från yttre mätbara betingelser. Till exempel är dålig hälsa per definition inte lika med dålig livskvalitet, men kan förstås starkt bidra till att minska den. Begreppet är viktigt inom medicinsk etik och hälsoekonomi. I ett större perspektiv anses ofta att livskvalitet uppstår genom till exempel omsorg om svaga grupper i samhället, miljöskydd, tillgång till meningsfulla fritidsaktiviteter, förbättring av boendeförhållanden, arbetsvillkor och hälsovård.

Wskaźnik Jakości Życia (ang. Quality of Life Index) wskaźnik, opracowany przez brytyjski tygodnik The Economist dla odzwierciedlenia poziomu życia i satysfakcji życiowej w poszczególnych krajach w bardziej adekwatny sposób niż przy użyciu tradycyjnych metod (wskaźnika wzrostu PKB lub poziomu PKB na 1 mieszkańca).
