A wave vector is a vector that specifies the wavenumber and direction of propagation for a wave. The magnitude of the wave vector indicates the wavenumber. The orientation of the wave vector indicates the direction of wave propagation. For example consider a plane wave. A common representation of the oscillation at time (t) and a single point in space (z) along the direction of propagation is: where A is the amplitude, φ is the starting phase of the wave, k is the angular wavenumber, and ω is the angular frequency. We can easily extend the formula by substituting the dot product of the wave vector k and the position vector r for the scalar product of the wavenumber k and the variable z as follows:.

En physique, un vecteur d'onde (ou « vecteur de phase » notamment en électronique) est un vecteur perpendiculaire au front d'onde d'une onde monochromatique et indiquant ainsi la direction de sa propagation. La norme du vecteur d'onde correspond au nombre d'onde (lié à l'inverse de la longueur d'onde), il est un support à l'approximation qu'est l'optique géométrique, et c'est l'équivalent pour l'onde, de la quantité de mouvement pour un corps massif. Cette similitude a déjà trouvé son aboutissement dans les travaux de Louis de Broglie au début du siècle qui aidèrent à la naissance de la physique quantique et dans cette théorie la similitude à trouvé confirmation dans la dualité onde-corpuscule. Pour la lumière, et en relativité restreinte et générale, le vecteur d'onde est complété par la fréquence pour donner le quadrivecteur d'onde.
