Waterway
A waterway is any navigable body of waters. Waterways can include riverslakesseasoceans, and canals. In order for a waterway to be navigable, it must meet several criteria:
  • The waterway must be deep enough to allow the draft depth of the vessels using it;
  • The waterway must be wide enough to allow passage for the beam width of the vessels using it;
  • The waterway must be free of barriers to navigation such as waterfalls and rapids, or have a way around them (such as canal locks and boat lifts);
  • The current of the waterway must be mild enough to allow vessels to make headway.

Vaarweg
Een vaarweg of waterweg is een water dat kan worden bevaren. Dit kan een rivier of kanaal zijn of een aangelegde geul in een verder ondiep water.

Zeeën en diepe meren zijn ook vaarwegen, al worden ze in het algemeen niet zo genoemd.

Hidrovia
Hidrovia é uma rota pre-determinada para o tráfego aquático.

Desde tempos muito antigos, o homem utiliza a água como estrada. Nos dias atuais, mares, lagos e rios são constantemente cortados por embarcações do mais diferentes tipos, desde os imponentes navios até as humildes barcaças. Cada um desses veículos foi planejado e construído de forma a preencher certos requisitos que lhe dêem o máximo de eficiência na tarefa que lhe cabe.
