A wart is generally a small, rough tumor, typically on hands and feet, that can resemble a cauliflower or a solid blister. Warts are common, and are caused by a viral infection, specifically by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and are contagious when in contact with the skin of another. It is also possible to get warts from using towels or other objects. They typically disappear after a few months but can last for years and can reoccur. A few papilloma viruses are known to cause cervical cancer.

Warzen (lat. Verrucae) sind häufige, unter Umständen sehr ansteckende, kleine, scharf begrenzte, in der Regel gutartige Epithel-Geschwülste der Haut (Epidermis). Meistens sind sie leicht erhaben oder flach. Sie sind auf eine Infektion zumeist mit einem der mehr als 100 verschiedenen "low-risk" humanen Papillomviren aus der Familie der Papillomaviridae (unbehüllte, doppelsträngige DNA-Viren) zurückzuführen. Die Infektion erfolgt per Kontaktinfektion beziehungsweise Schmierinfektion über kleinste Verletzungen der Haut und der Schleimhäute. Dort infizieren sie nur die oberste Schicht der Hautzellen und vermehren sich in deren Zellkernen. Vom Zeitpunkt der Ansteckung bis zur Bildung der Warzen können Wochen bis Monate vergehen.

La verruca è una formazione cutanea indotta dal virus del papilloma umano (altrimenti noto con l'acronimo anglofono HPV che sta per Human Papilloma Virus) della famiglia Papovaviridae. Si tratta di formazioni benigne costituite da un nucleo di tessuto interno alimentato da vasi sanguigni e rivestito da vari strati di tessuto epiletale. Il virus penetra nell'epidermide e le infetta, determinandone un'eccessiva velocità di replicazione. Il contagio avviene per contatto superficiale (il virus quindi rimane confinato nella pelle e non è presente nel sangue) solitamente in luoghi molto frequentati come docce, palestre e piscine, dove il clima caldo e umido favorisce la sopravvivenza del virus in forma attiva. Mancando queste condizioni ambientali il virus non sopravvive a lungo al di fuori degli strati cutanei.
