The word gradually came to denote the governor of a province; the territory ruled or administered by a voivode is known as a voivodeship. The Polish title is sometimes rendered in English as Palatine or Count Palatine, in charge of a palatinate. In the Slavic terminology, the rank of a voivode is in some cases considered equal of that of a German Duke (Herzog) (see Etymology below).

Voïvode est un terme d’origine slave, qui désigne au départ le commandant d’une région militaire. Dérivé du slavon, voï (armée) et voda (qui conduit), il était utilisé à l’époque médiévale dans toute la zone de l'Europe centrale et orientale.

Wojwode (auch Woiwode, Vojvode, Vojvoda, Woiwod, Воевода) aus dem Slawischen (kroat. und serb. „vojvoda“); zusammengesetzt aus vojna Krieg oder vojska Armee und vođa Führer war ein slawischer Adelsrang unterhalb dem eines Fürsten (Knjaz). Er bezeichnet einen Heerführer oder Militärstatthalter und ist etwa vergleichbar mit dem germanischen Titel Herzog. Der Titel Woiwode/Wojewoda/Voivode wurde in Polen, Moldawien, Walachei, Serbien, Kroatien, Russland, Weißrussland, Ukraine und teilweise auch in Bulgarien und Ungarn (Vajda) verwendet.

Voivòda o vaivòda (dal serbo-croato voi, esercito e voda, comandante) è un termine slavo che designa per origine il comandante di un'unità militare. Usato sin dall'età medievale, il titolo veniva attribuito ai governatori o capi di territori in Polonia, Russia, Moldavia, Serbia, Romania e Bulgaria; in questi ultimi due paesi il titolo era anche proprio del principe ereditario. Il grado di Voivòda era anche il grado militare più elevato in Montenegro, Serbia e Jugoslavia.
