A is a work of interactive fiction, featuring mostly static graphics, most often using anime-style art or occasionally live-action stills (and sometimes video footage). As the name might suggest, they resemble mixed-media novels or tableau vivant stage plays. They are analogous to a digitized version of a Choose Your Own Adventure novel.

Diese werden außerhalb Japans häufig einerseits als Visual Novels (, bijuaru noberu, dt. etwa: „Bildroman“) bezeichnet, die jedoch nur ein Untergenre sind, andererseits aber auch mit den Dating-Sims verwechselt.

Visual novel to specyficzny gatunek gier pochodzący z Japonii, charakteryzuje się silnie rozwiniętą, wielowątkową fabułą oraz prostą, statyczną grafiką, najczęściej ręcznie rysowaną w stylu anime. Wielu graczy nie uważa ich za gry, gdyż o wiele bliżej im do powieści (stąd nazwa): w visual novels się nie gra, lecz czyta, ogląda i słucha - klawiaturą lub myszą jedynie przewija się tekst i czasami dokonuje wyborów. Gatunkowo najbardziej podobne są do przygodówek. Zdecydowana większość tego typu gier jest wydawana w Japonii, głównie na PCety, lecz również na konsole.
