Visual effects (commonly shortened to Visual F/X or VFX) are the various processes by which imagery is created and/or manipulated outside the context of a live action shoot. Visual effects involve the integration of live-action footage and generated imagery to create environments which look realistic, but would be dangerous, costly, or simply impossible to capture on film. Visual effects using computer generated imagery (CGI) have become increasingly common in big-budget films, and have also recently become accessible to the Independent filmmaker with the introduction of affordable animation and compositing software.

Als visuelle Effekte bzw. englisch visual effects (VFX) werden Effekte in Filmen bezeichnet, die in der Postproduktion erzeugt werden, heutzutage meist digital mit Computern - im Gegensatz zu Spezialeffekten (SFX), die vor Ort am Set gedreht werden.

VFX（ブイエフエックス）とは、Visual Effects（ビジュアル・エフェクツ）の略で、映画や特撮ドラマで現実には見ることのできない画面効果を実現するための技術のことを指す。視覚効果と訳されることもある。

Visuaalinen tehoste (kutsutaan myös joskus nimellä visuaalinen erikoistehoste) on elokuvan jälkityöstövaiheessa, nykyisin yleensä tietokoneella toteutettu erikoistehoste. Kyseessä saattaa olla kokonaan tietokoneella luotu kuvamateriaali tai kameralla kuvattu materiaali, joka tietokoneella käsitellään tai yhdistetään muihin kuviin.
