For the album by Only Crime, see Virulence (album) Virulence refers to the degree of pathogenicity of a microbe, or in other words the relative ability of a microbe to cause disease. The word virulent, which is the adjective for virulence, derives from the Latin word virulentus, which means "full of poison." From an ecological point of view, virulence can be defined as the host's parasite induced loss of fitness.

La virulence désigne le caractère pathogène, nocif et violent d'un micro-organisme (bactérie ou champignon). La virulence d'un pathogène létal est facilement mesurable mais celle des pathogènes à effets sous-létaux est plus complexe à évaluer.

Virulentie is een maat voor de hoeveelheid schade die een micro-organisme in zijn gastheer aanricht. Het is een kwantitatief begrip voor de mate van pathogeniteit en kan worden beschreven als ziekmakend vermogen.Een virulente bacteriofaag zal na infectie van de gastheercel deze direct instrueren om kopieën van de faag te maken, waardoor de gastheer snel sterft. Een minder virulente bacteriofaag kan zijn genoom inbouwen in het bacteriële genoom, en gedurende het leven van de bacterie steeds nieuwe fagen laten produceren.

Вируле́нтность (от лат. Virulentus — ядовитый) - степень способности данного инфекционного агента (штамма  микроорганизма или вируса) заражать данный организм. Вирулентность неравнозначна способности вызывать заболевание (патогенности), поскольку после заражения микроорганизм может превращаться в симбионта организма-хозяина, не вызывая отрицательных последствий.
