viral meningitis

Meningitis is the inflammation of the protective membranes covering the central nervous system, known collectively as the meninges. Meningitis may develop in response to a number of causes, including infectious agents, physical injury, cancer, or certain drugs. While some forms of meningitis are mild and resolve on their own, meningitis is a potentially serious condition owing to the proximity of the inflammation to the brain and spinal cord. The potential for serious neurologic damage or even death necessitates prompt medical attention and evaluation. Infectious meningitis, the most common form, is typically treated with antibiotics and close observation.

Der Begriff Meningitis (deutsch: Hirnhautentzündung) bezeichnet eine Entzündung der Hirn- und Rückenmarkshäute (Meningen). Die meisten Meningitiden sind infektiöser Genese. Man unterscheidet zwischen einer viralen (nichteitrigen) und einer bakteriellen (eitrigen) Meningitis. Darüber hinaus können verschiedene Systemerkrankungen (z. B.  Kollagenosen, Vaskulitiden, Sarkoidose) oder bösartige Veränderungen (z. B. Meningeosis carcinomatosa) sowie ionisierende Strahlen oder  intrathekal verabreichte Medikamente eine Meningitis verursachen. Eine Meningitis kann akut, chronisch oder rezidivierend verlaufen.

La meningite è una malattia infiammatoria delle membrane che rivestono l'encefalo, principalmente pia madre ed aracnoide, e del liquido cerebro-spinale (liquor). La causa può essere infettiva (batteri, virus, miceti, parassiti) o anche un agente chimico o fisico. È possibile anche che una risposta flogistica meningea venga in risposta ad una invasione da parte di neoplasie o nel corso di malattie autoimmuni.
