Viral load
Viral load is a measure of the severity of a
viral infection, and can be calculated by estimating the amount of virus in an involved body fluid, for example, it can be given in
RNA copies per milliliter of blood plasma. Determination of viral load is part of the therapy monitoring during chronic viral infections and in immunocompromised patients, e.g. after
bone marrow or solid organ
transplantation. Currently, routine testing is available for
HIV-1,
cytomegalovirus,
hepatitis B virus, and
hepatitis C virus.

Die Viruslast (engl. viral load) stellt die Menge eines im
Blutserum oder
Blutplasma gefundenen
Virus dar und wird z. B. als Konzentration der Genome (bei
DNA-Viren) oder Genomäquivalente (bei
RNA-Viren) pro Milliliter angegeben.Die Bezeichnung Viruslast entstammt ursprünglich der
HIV-Therapie, bei der erstmals die Bestimmung der Konzentration entscheidend für den weiteren Therapieverlauf war und anfänglich eben die "Belastung" der zellulären Immunität mit infektiösen Viren meinte. Mit der Zeit wurde der Begriff auch auf das
Hepatitis-B-Virus und
Hepatitis-C-Virus übertragen.
