Viking metal is a term used in reference to heavy metal music with a dramatic emphasis on Norse mythology, Norse paganism, and the life and times of Northern and Central Europeans prior to the Christianization of Scandinavia. It is still debated whether or not Viking metal can be considerd a stand alone "genre", or merely an ideological off-shoot of other genres, as the influence of style being played varies among artists. Bands associated with Viking metal cover a broad range of musical genres and influences, such as folk metal, thrash metal, death metal, black metal, and power metal.

Le Viking metal est un terme utilisé pour décrire le mouvement de groupes de heavy metal, principalement le folk metal, dont les paroles font référence principalement à la mythologie nordique ou aux Vikings. Les origines du viking metal nous amènent au groupe suédois Bathory, avec la sortie de leur quatrième album en 1988 intitulé Blood Fire Death. Les thèmes de la mythologie germanique et du rejet du christianisme sont parfois associés au mouvement, un mouvement dont beaucoup des groupes sont originaires de Scandinavie.

Der Begriff Viking Metal kennzeichnet ein Metal-Subgenre, das musikalische Elemente des Black- oder Death Metals mit den Folk-Melodien Skandinaviens vermengt, wobei die Texte hauptsächlich das Leben, die Sagen, die Schlachten bzw. allgemein die Mythologie der Wikinger behandeln. Abzugrenzen vom Viking Metal ist hingegen der Vikingrock, bei dem zwar in den Texten ebenfalls die Wikinger im Vordergrund stehen, der sich musikalisch aber eher an den Rock oder den Punk anlehnt.

Viking metal - podgatunek muzyki heavymetalowej, którego początki sięgają wydanej w 1988 roku płyty studyjnej Blood Fire Death, szwedzkiego zespołu metalowego Bathory. Ówcześnie jedynie nowa forma black metalu, jego faktyczny rozwój jako odrębnego gatunku powiązać można z wydaniem kolejnych albumów Bathory oraz pojawieniem się wielu skandynawskich grup w latach 90. XX wieku takich jak Enslaved, Hades Almighty, Vintersorg, Einherjer.
