A videotape is a recording of images and sounds on to magnetic tape as opposed to film stock or random access digital media. Videotapes are also used for storing scientific or medical data, such as the data produced by an electrocardiogram. In most cases, a helical scan video head rotates against the moving tape to record the data in two dimensions, because video signals have a very high bandwidth, and static heads would require extremely high tape speeds. Videotape is used in both video tape recorders (VTRs) or, more commonly and more recently, videocassette recorder (VCR) and camcorders. Tape is a linear method of storing information and, since nearly all video recordings made nowadays are digital direct to disk recording, it is expected to gradually lose importance as non-linear/random-access methods of storing digital video data become more common.

Eine Videokassette besteht aus einer Plastikkassette aus Polystyrol, in der sich ein aufgerolltes magnetisierbar beschichtetes Kunststoffband (Magnetband oder Videoband) befindet. Die Videokassette wird als Datenträger für Filme eingesetzt.

La cassette vidéo est un document électronique qui peut être visionné à l'aide d'un magnétoscope. Elle contient un film vidéo. Le plus souvent elle contient deux bobines de bande magnétique l'une contenant la bande au départ et l'autre servant à enrouler la bande déjà lue. Pour la lecture ou l'enregistrement, la bande est enroulée autour d'un tambour rotatif qui comporte les têtes de lectures. Les pistes sont enregistrées sur le modèle hélicoïdal, c’est-à-dire en tranches obliques sur la bande. Le plus souvent, une tranche correspond à une image, ou trame du film vidéo. L'enregistrement peut être analogique (FM), ou numérique il existe plusieurs formats de cassette vidéo :

Videoband, videokassett, VHS-band eller VHS-kassett är en typ av media på vilket rörliga bilder kan lagras. Videoband finns i olika format för olika videosystem, främst vhs, Video 2000 och Betamax.
