Vertebrates are animals that are members of the subphylum Vertebrata (chordates with backbones and spinal columns). Vertebrates include the overwhelming majority of the phylum chordata, with currently about 64,000 species described. Vertebrates include the jawless fishes, bony fishes, sharks and rays, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and birds. Extant vertebrates range in size from the frog species Paedophryne amauensis, at as little as 7.7 mm (0.3 inch), to the blue whale, at up to 33 m (110 ft). Vertebrates make up about 4% of all described animal species; the rest are invertebrates, which lack backbones.

Die Wirbeltiere (Vertebrata), oft Schädeltiere (Craniota oder Craniata) genannt, bilden einen Unterstamm der Chordatiere (Chordata) und umfassen Schleimaale, Neunaugen, Knorpel- und Knochenfische, die Amphibien, die Reptilien, die Vögel und die Säugetiere mit zusammen nahezu 58.000 Arten. Dies sind nach Schätzungen etwa ein Prozent aller jemals existierenden Arten. Weltweit sind bisher mehrere zehntausend fossile Arten entdeckt worden.

Les vertébrés forment un sous-embranchement du règne animal. Ce taxon, qui dans sa version moderne exclut les myxines, est considéré comme monophylétique. Il appartient à l'embranchement des Chordés, eux-mêmes un taxon des Deutérostomiens.

Ryggradsdjur eller vertebrater (Vertebrata) är en understam bland ryggsträngsdjuren som har ett skyddande hölje av kalciumfosfat runt ryggsträngen. Ryggradsdjuren har ett endoskelett, vilket innebär ett skelett som är inneslutet i kroppen, till skillnad från exoskelett, vilket är vanligt hos exempelvis leddjuren.

Kręgowce (Vertebrata, od łac. vertebra - kręg) – silnie zróżnicowany morfologicznie podtyp zwierząt zaliczanych do strunowców. Zazwyczaj synonimizuje się je z czaszkowcami (Craniota).
