Vertebrates are members of the subphylum Vertebrata (within the phylum Chordata), specifically, those chordates with backbones or spinal columns. About 57,739 species of vertebrates have been described. Vertebrata is the largest subphylum of chordates, and contains many familiar groups of large land animals. Fish (including lampreys, but traditionally not hagfish, though this is now disputed), amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals (including humans) are vertebrates.

I Vertebrati (Vertebrata) sono un subphylum dei Cordati (facenti parte degli Animali), caratterizzato dal possedere una struttura scheletrica ossea e/o di cartilagine.Attualmente, escluse cioè le specie fossili, sono rappresentati da circa 50.000 specie di cui la metà sono Pesci e Agnatha. Gli Uccelli invece sono il secondo gruppo tassonomico con 9'000 specie circa, seguono i Rettili con circa 6'000, i Mammiferi con 4'000 e gli Anfibi con quasi 4'000 specie. Il tessuto osseo è evolutivamente anteriore a quello cartilagineo.
