An equinox occurs twice a year (around 20 March and 22 September), when the tilt of the Earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the center of the Sun being in the same plane as the Earth's equator. The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens. The name "equinox" is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day have approximately equal length.

Als Äquinoktium (lat. aequus „gleich“, nox „Nacht“) werden in der Astronomie gewisse Zeitpunkte und diesbezügliche astronomische Referenzpunkte (Äquinoktialpunkte) bezeichnet. Ein anderes Wort dafür ist Tagundnachtgleiche (auch in der Schreibweise Tag-und-Nacht-Gleiche).

Les équinoxes de mars et de septembre sont les deux moments de l'année où le jour et la nuit sont approximativement de même durée. Lors des équinoxes, le soleil se lève exactement à l'Est et se couche exactement à l'Ouest. En astronomie, un équinoxe est le moment où le Soleil atteint une des deux intersections entre l'écliptique et l'équateur céleste : sa déclinaison est alors nulle. L'intersection correspondant à l'équinoxe de mars est le point vernal.

Dagjämning (lat. eqvinoktium), är den tidpunkt, då solens medelpunkt, vid denna himlakropps skenbara omlopp kring jorden (egentligen är det jorden som kretsar kring solen även om många trodde det omvända fram till 1600-talet), sammanfaller med ekvatorn.

Równonoc - występuje dwa razy w roku - 20/21 marca (równonoc wiosenna) i 22/23 września (równonoc jesienna). Jest to czas obejmujący jedną dobę ziemską, w którym to centrum tarczy słonecznej obecne jest tyle samo czasu pod i nad horyzontem, a promienie słoneczne padają na równik pod kątem 90º. W tych dniach Słońce wschodzi dokładnie na wschodzie, a zachodzi na zachodzie. Ponieważ słońce widziane jest jako tarcza, a dzień zaczyna się lub kończy, gdy padają pierwsze lub ostatnie promienie ze skraju tarczy, kiedy centrum tarczy jest pod horyzontem, to w czasie równonocy dzień jest dłuższy od nocy o około 14 minut.
