Vernacular architecture
Vernacular architecture is a category of architecture based on localized needs and construction materials, and reflecting local traditions. Vernacular architecture tends to evolve over time to reflect the environmental, cultural, technological, and historical context in which it exists. It has often been dismissed as crude and unrefined, but also has proponents who highlight its importance in current design.

Anonyme Architektur
Anonyme Architektur ist ein Begriff für Traditionelle Architektur, der von Bernard Rudofsky geprägt wurde. Er bezeichnet ein Segment des Bauens, das ohne Mitwirkung einer professionellen gestalterischen Planung entsteht. Der Begriff wird heute gelegentlich synonym zu Traditionelle Architektur benutzt.

בנייה ורנקולרית
בנייה ורנקולרית (Vernacular) היא בנייה עממית, ללא אדריכלים, המשתמשת בחומרים מקומיים ובטכנולוגיות מסורתיות. המושג "ארכיטקטורה ללא ארכיטקטים" הבא לתאר את הבנייה הוורנקולרית נטבע לראשונה על ידי ברנרד רודופסקי בספרו בשם זה בשנת 1964. הכפר הערבי, כגון סילואן וליפתא, טיפוסי מאוד לבנייה כזו. גם בירושלים הבנייה הזו מופיעה, כגון במעלות אלרם שבשכונת תלפיות. בערים רבות באגן הים התיכון קיימת בנייה ורנקולרית, כמו באי היווני סנטוריני, בעיר מרקש במרוקו ובערים רבות אחרות. בנייה ורנקולרית מתייחסת גם לסוג בנייה מקומי ולטכנולוגיה מקומית אשר התפתחו במשך תקופה ממושכת, כמו למשל בניית בקתות עץ או קש, בנייה באדמה, במבוק וחומרים מקומיים נוספים אשר ניתן למצוא בעיקר בכפרים עתיקים או פרימיטיביים.
המאפיין העיקרי של עיר אשר בנויה באופן ורנקולרי הוא שהיא התפתחה במשך מאות שנים ובקצב איטי תוך שינויים קטנים כל הזמן. צורת התפתחות זו יצרה חללים עירוניים מיוחדים אשר ענו על צורכי האוכלוסייה באופן מדויק וממצה. השינויים הקטנים במשך השנים עזרו לעיר להשתלב בסביבתה הטבעית ולייצר "מכונה עירונית" המתפקדת באופן אופטימלי.
בעיני רבים הבנייה הוורנקולרית העתיקה, במקומות רבים בעולם, היא רומנטית.
