Il virus varicella-zoster è un virus appartenente alla famiglia degli Herpesviridae. È responsabile sia della malattia della varicella, sia dell'herpes zoster.Strutturato a forma di tipo cubica, è molto piccolo (220-240 milionesimi di millimetro) e visibile solo al microscopio elettronico. Colpisce solo l'uomo e le scimmie antropomorfe.

Het Varicella zoster virus of VZV is een alpha-herpesvirus, HHV-3 (humaan herpes virus), dat verantwoordelijk is voor zowel waterpokken als gordelroos. Het merendeel van de bevolking (ca 90%) blijkt bij bloedonderzoek antistoffen te hebben tegen Varicella zoster.
