The valiha is a bamboo tube zither from Madagascar. It is played by plucking the strings, which may be made of metal or (originally) the bamboo skin which is pried up in long strands and propped up by small bridges.The strings are generally made of bicycle brake cable. The cables are unstrung into individual strands and each string of the instrument is made of only one or two strands of the cable, depending upon the tastes of the player.The greatest valiha player in recent memory is generally acknowledged to be Rakotosafy, who was born in 1938. Few of his recordings exist today, most of which were made live at the central studio of Malagasy Radio.

Die Valiha oder Bambuszitter ist ein madagassisches Saiteninstrument in Form einer Röhrenzither. Die Tonhöhen sind durch kleine Hölzchen gegeben, die zwischen Rohr und Saiten geklemmt werden.Die Saiten bestehen aus dem Bambusrohr selbst. Sie werden mit einem Messer ausgeschnitten, wobei die Enden am Rohr bleiben und mit Bast oder Lederriemen umwickelt werden. Die Zahl der Saiten variiert je nach Durchmesser und Abstand der Bambusringe und kann mehr als 18 betragen. So kann ein Instrument über 1 m lang sein. Neuere Konstruktionen haben metallene Saiten und sind mit folkloristischen Motiven verziert. Sie wird üblicherweise mit den Fingernägeln gespielt.

La valiha è uno strumento musicale a corde tipico del Madagascar. Assomiglia a una cetra con la cassa armonica realizzata con una canna di bambù di grande diametro. Le corde erano tradizionalmente fatte con fili di corteccia della pianta; oggi sono comunemente usate corde di chitarra o dai fili metallici che, attorcigliati, formano i cavi dei freni delle bicicletta. In questo caso, ogni corda può essere costituita da un singolo filo o da due fili attorcigliati. I ponticelli sono realizzati con piccoli pezzi di legno fissati a diverse distanze lungo la canna.
