A vaccine is a biological preparation that improves immunity to a particular disease. A vaccine typically contains an agent that resembles a disease-causing microorganism, and is often made from weakened or killed forms of the microbe, its toxins or one of its surface proteins. The agent stimulates the body's immune system to recognize the agent as foreign, destroy it, and "remember" it, so that the immune system can more easily recognize and destroy any of these microorganisms that it later encounters.

Ein Impfstoff oder eine Vakzine (von lateinisch vaccina, „die von Kühen Stammende“; vergleiche Vakzination) ist ein biologisch oder gentechnisch hergestelltes Antigen, meist bestehend aus Protein- oder Erbgutbruchstücken, abgetöteten oder abgeschwächten Erregern. Der Impfstoff dient im Rahmen einer Impfung zur spezifischen Aktivierung des Immunsystems hinsichtlich eines bestimmten Erregers bzw. einer Erregergruppe.

La vaccination est un procédé consistant à introduire un agent extérieur (le vaccin) dans un organisme vivant afin de créer une réaction immunitaire positive contre une maladie infectieuse. L'immunità deriva dalla stimolazione, nel soggetto ricevente, alla produzione di anticorpi neutralizzanti il microrganismo stesso.
