Vaccination is the administration of antigenic material (a vaccine) to stimulate the immune system of an individual to develop adaptive immunity to a disease. Vaccines can prevent or ameliorate the effects of infection by many pathogens. The efficacy of vaccination has been widely studied and verified; for example, the influenza vaccine, the HPV vaccine, and the chicken pox vaccine among others. In general, vaccination is considered to be the most effective method of preventing infectious diseases. The active agent of a vaccine may be intact but inactivated (non-infective) or attenuated (with reduced infectivity) forms of the causative pathogens, or purified components of the pathogen that have been found to be highly immunogenic (e.g., the outer coat proteins of a virus). Toxoids are produced for the immunization against toxin-based diseases, such as the modification of tetanospasmin toxin of tetanus to remove its toxic effect but retain its immunogenic effect.

Die Impfung ist eine vorbeugende Maßnahme gegen verschiedene Infektionskrankheiten und wird deshalb auch Schutzimpfung genannt. Man unterscheidet aktive Impfung und passive Immunisierung. Bei einer aktiven Impfung – auch Vakzination genannt – wird der Impfstoff (Vakzine) in Form abgeschwächter, abgetöteter oder fragmentierter Krankheitserreger oder deren Toxine in den Körper eingebracht. Ziel dieser Impfung ist es, das körpereigene Immunsystem zur Bildung spezifischer Antikörper anzuregen und so eine spezifische Immunität gegen die entsprechende Infektionskrankheit zu bewirken. Bei einer passiven Impfung hingegen wird mit Impfserum geimpft, welches die spezifischen Antikörper (Immunglobuline) gegen den betreffenden Krankheitserreger oder dessen Toxin bereits in hoher Konzentration enthält. Es stehen Impfstoffe gegen eine Vielzahl von viralen und bakteriellen Infektionskrankheiten bereit.

La vaccination est un procédé consistant à introduire un agent extérieur (le vaccin) dans un organisme vivant afin de créer une réaction immunitaire positive contre une maladie infectieuse. Le principe actif d’un vaccin est un antigène destiné à stimuler les défenses naturelles de l'organisme (le système immunitaire). La réaction immunitaire primaire permet en parallèle une mise en mémoire de l'antigène présenté pour qu' à l'avenir, lors d'une contamination vraie, l'immunité acquise puisse s'activer de façon plus rapide. Il existe quatre types de vaccins selon leur préparation : agents infectieux inactivés, agents vivants atténués, sous-unités d’agents infectieux ou toxines inactivées.
