A völva, vala (Old Norse), wala (Old High German), seiðkona, spákona or wicce (Old English) was a wise woman, shaman, or priestess in Norse and Germanic paganism and they are a recurring motif in Norse mythology.They were highly respected members of society who took care of people's ailments, both physical and spiritual with their herbalism and prophecies. With the introduction of Christianity, they would become marginalized and even persecuted , but they would live on in the north European concept of witch.

Die Völva ist der altnordische Begriff für eine Seherin, Wahrsagerin, Hexe, Zauberin, Prophetin oder Schamanin. In der germanischen Mythologie ist sie auch als Wala bekannt. Hiervon abgeleitet ist englisch witch für Hexe.Das Wort Völva bedeutet eigentlich ganz einfach Frau mit Stab. Den Stab nannte man auch völr. Er war ein Symbol der Macht. Im Falle der Völva symbolisiert er die Macht über das Übernatürliche. Das Königszepter und der Zauberstab sind Überbleibsel derselben Symbolik. Das altwestnordische Wort gandur bedeutet auf färöisch und isländisch sowohl Stab als auch Zauberei. Möglicherweise handelt es sich auch um ein Phallussymbol. Denn es wird verschiedentlich davon berichtet, dass Frauen Phallus–Riten ausführten.
