A vacuum is a volume of space that is essentially empty of matter, such that its gaseous pressure is much less than standard atmospheric pressure. The Latin term in vacuo is used to describe an object as being in what would otherwise be a vacuum. The root of the word vacuum is the Latin adjective vacuus which means "empty," but space can never be perfectly empty. A perfect vacuum with a gaseous pressure of absolute zero is a philosophical concept that is never observed in practice, not least because quantum theory predicts that no volume of space can be perfectly empty in this way. Physicists often use the term "vacuum" slightly differently. They discuss ideal test results that would occur in a perfect vacuum, which they simply call "vacuum" or "free space" in this context, and use the term partial vacuum to refer to the imperfect vacua realized in practice.

Na qumica, o vácuo é a ausência de matéria (como moléculas e átomos) em um volume de espaço. Um vácuo parcial é expresso em unidades de pressão. No sistema de medidas SI, a unidade para a pressão chama-se Pascal (Pa). A pressão também pode ser expressa como uma porcentagem da pressão atmosférica usando o bar ou a escala barométrica. Descoberto e provado no século XVI pelo físico alemão Otto von Guericke na cidade de Magdeburgo.

Vakuum (latinsk stavning vacuum) är fysikaliskt uttryck för ett utrymme som inte innehåller någon materia alls. Perfekt vakuum är omöjligt att framställa men vakuum i vardaglig mening, ett kraftigt sänkt lufttryck, är användbart i många sammanhang, exempelvis i barometrar och katodstrålerör i TV-apparater. Ibland menar man även ett måttligt undertryck när man säger vakuum, till exempel talar man om vakuumslangar på bilmotorer och på engelska kallas dammsugare vacuum cleaner trots att varken bilmotorer eller dammsugare ens är i närheten av att åstadkomma vakuum i fysikalisk mening.
