Utopia is an ideal community or society possessing a perfect socio-politico-legal system. The word was coined in Greek by Sir Thomas More for his 1516 book Utopia, describing a fictional island in the Atlantic Ocean. The term has been used to describe both intentional communities that attempt to create an ideal society, and fictional societies portrayed in literature. It has spawned other concepts, most prominently dystopia.

Eine Utopie (griechisch   „die Nicht-Örtlichkeit“; aus altgriechisch   „nicht-“ und „Ort“; vergleiche auch Dystopie, und Atopie) ist eine Wunschvorstellung, die sich dadurch auszeichnet, dass sie zwar denkbar und in vielen Fällen wünschenswert, vor dem jeweiligen historisch-kulturellen Hintergrund jedoch in vielen Fällen (noch) nicht oder nicht mehr realisierbar ist. Sie ist die Beschreibung einer Welt, eines Ortes, an dem derartige Vorstellungen verwirklicht sind. Im Sprachgebrauch wird Utopie auch als Synonym für einen von der jeweils vorherrschenden Gesellschaft vorwiegend als unausführbar betrachteten Plan, ein Konzept und eine Vision, benutzt.

L'utopie (néologisme de Thomas More, synthèse des mots grecs ύ-τοπος, nulle part et de ηύ-τοπος, lieu de bonheur) est une représentation d'une réalité idéale et sans défaut. Cela se traduit, dans les écrits, par un régime politique idéal (qui gouvernerait parfaitement les hommes), une société parfaite (sans injustice par exemple, comme la Callipolis de Socrate) ou encore une communauté d'individus vivant heureux et en harmonie (l'abbaye de Thélème, dans Gargantua, de Rabelais, en 1534).

En utopi är ett tänkt idealsamhälle, som kan ta många former. Det finns till exempel ekonomiska utopier, religiösa utopier, ekologiska utopier, politiska utopier, feministiska utopier, vetenskapliga/teknologiska utopier och akademiska utopier. I vardagsbruk kan ordet ibland användas i bemärkelsen orealistisk. Termen kommer av Thomas Mores bok Utopia, som publicerades år 1516, men utopisk litteratur har en mycket längre historia än så; Platons Staten anses allmänt vara den första i genren. Den muntliga traditionen går dessutom ännu längre tillbaka. Människans längtan efter den perfekta tillvaron speglas i våra myter och legender – från Atlantis till himmelriket. I politisk retorik är utopi ett negativt laddat ord använt för att avskriva motståndarens ståndpunkt som orealistisk.
