The uterus or womb is the major female reproductive organ of most mammals, including humans. One end, the cervix, opens into the vagina; the other is connected on both sides to the fallopian tubes. The term uterus is commonly used within the medical and related professions, whilst womb is in more common usage. The plural of uterus is uteri.

L'utérus, ou matrice, est un organe participant aux fonctions reproductrices chez  mammifères dont la femme. C'est une poche dont l'intérieur très vascularisé, ouverte vers le col utérin à l'extérieur , et qui du coté postérieur, vers l'abdomen, possède deux parties séparées appelées cornes qui débouchent sur les trompes de Fallope conduisant aux ovaires. Ces cornes et le corps proprement dit de l'utérus sont plus ou moins marquée selon les espèces.

Die Gebärmutter – lat. Uterus, griech. μέτρα (metra) oder ὑστέρα (hystera) – ist ein weibliches  Geschlechtsorgan, in welchem die befruchteten Eizellen vor der Geburt zum geburtsreifen Fetus heranreifen. Alle weiblichen Säugetiere besitzen eine Gebärmutter. Für die Bezeichnung von Prozessen innerhalb der Gebärmutter verwendet man das Adjektiv intrauterin.

L'utero è un organo delle femmine degli Amnioti. Nelle specie ovipare riveste la cellula uovo dell'albume e del guscio. Nelle specie vivipare è destinato ad accogliere la blastula: al suo interno si svilupperà il nascituro. Nei Mammiferi Metateri ed Euteri si ha l'annidamento dell'embrione nella mucosa uterina.
