The user interface, in the industrial design field of human–machine interaction, is the space where interaction between humans and machines occurs. The goal of interaction between a human and a machine at the user interface is effective operation and control of the machine, and feedback from the machine which aids the operator in making operational decisions. Examples of this broad concept of user interfaces include the interactive aspects of computer operating systems, hand tools, heavy machinery operator controls, and process controls. The design considerations applicable when creating user interfaces are related to or involve such disciplines as ergonomics and psychology.

Mit Benutzerschnittstelle wird das Untersystem in einem Mensch-Maschine-System bezeichnet, mit dem Menschen interagieren. Sie muss, um vom Menschen bedienbar zu sein, speziell auf die Bedürfnisse des Menschen angepasst sein. In der Mensch-Computer-Interaktionsforschung werden diese Aspekte für die Benutzerschnittstelle berücksichtigt.

L'interface Homme-machine ou interaction humain-machine (IHM) ou interface personne-machine (IPM) étudie la façon dont les humains interagissent avec les ordinateurs ou entre eux à l'aide d'ordinateurs, ainsi que la façon de concevoir des systèmes informatiques qui soient ergonomiques, c'est-à-dire efficaces, faciles à utiliser ou plus généralement adaptés à leur contexte d'utilisation.

Ett användargränssnitt kan beskrivas som en länk mellan användaren och den hårdvara eller programvara som användaren arbetar med. Användargränssnittet medger två saker:

• Inmatning, som ger användaren möjlighet att påverka systemet
• Utdata, som ger systemet möjlighet att presentera information och visa resultatet av användarens påverkan

Interfejs użytkownika (ang. User Interface, UI) — w technice część urządzenia odpowiedzialna za interakcję z użytkownikiem. Człowiek nie jest zdolny do bezpośredniej komunikacji z maszynami. Aby było to możliwe urządzenia są wyposażone w odpowiednie urządzenia wejścia-wyjścia tworzące razem interfejs użytkownika:

• interfejs tekstowy — urządzenie wejściowe to klawiatura, a wyjściowe to drukarka znakowa lub wyświetlacz w trybie znakowym,
• interfejs graficzny — wejście to urządzenie wskazujące (np. myszka), a wyjściowe to wyświetlacz graficzny,
• interfejs strony internetowej — wejście i wyjście jest realizowane poprzez stronę internetową wyświetlaną w przeglądarce internetowej.
