It's about a 20 minute drive from the commercial city of Onitsha which is the commercial nerve centre of West Africa because of the Onitsha Main Market which is the largest market in West Africa.Uke consists of eight different hamlets which are individually governed by a group of elders. Before 1995 which was when the former monarch passed on, it was a relatively peaceful and peace loving town. The new yam festival was a delight as well as the Uzu Iyi festival which was a masqurade festival that initally started off the new planting season. Nobody was allowed to plant until after this festival. The people of Uke loved and celebrated these festivals as one body as they were symbols of their unity.
