two voices

a local PMTH phrase.  A person speaks with two voices if she says what she thinks but also makes space for the other person to say what she thinks, either by asking questions, or by showing receptivity in some other way.  Jerry Shaffer labeled these voices an "assertive voice" and a "receptive voice."
