Track ballast
Track ballast forms the trackbed upon which
railroad ties (US) or railway sleepers (UK) are laid. It is packed between, below, and around the ties. It is used to facilitate
drainage of water, to distribute the load from the railroad ties, and also to keep down
vegetation that might interfere with the track structure. This also serves to hold the track in place as the trains roll by. It is typically made of crushed stone, although ballast has sometimes consisted of other, less suitable materials. The term "ballast" comes from a marine shipping term for the stones used to weigh down a ship.

Ballastbed
Het ballastbed is een lichaam van
steenslag, waarin de
dwarsliggers van een
spoorweg zijn ingebed. Het ballastbed zorgt voor stabiliteit, het dempen van de trillingen en voor de afvoer van overtollig regenwater. Bij een denivellatie of verzakking van de spoorlijn kan het ballastbed met behulp van speciale machines opgehoogd worden.

バラスト軌道
バラスト軌道（バラストきどう）とは、
鉄道の
線路あるいは
軌道において古くから使用されている
道床。 路盤に
バラスト（
砕石や
砂利）を敷き、
枕木で支持する構造の道床である。枕木からの重圧を効率よく分散させ路盤に伝えるので低振動・低騒音であること、排水が良いこと、建設費が安いこと等の利点が多いが、強度が低く狂いを生じやすいため
高速鉄道には不向きで
保守管理に手間がかかるという問題がある。 実例として、
東海道新幹線においては建設当時、
スラブ軌道にするかバラスト軌道にするかで論争となったが、信頼性の観点から従来どおりのバラスト軌道にした結果、保守に非常に手間がかかり、後年まで禍根を残す結果となった。 しかし近年では改良が進み、2004年に部分開業した
九州新幹線においては一部で再び採用されている。

Balastro
Balastro ou lastro é a camada de
pedra britada sobre o qual assenta o conjunto das travessas com os
carris. Destina-se a imobilizar este conjunto, como também a servir de "almofada" para a distribuição das cargas sobre a plataforma da via. O balastro ferroviário é também a pedra colocada na base das vias férreas, sobre as quais as mesmas assentam.
