Toponymy is the scientific study of place names (), their origins, meanings, use and . The word "toponymy" is derived from the Greek words tópos (τόπος) ("place") and ónoma (ὄνομα) ("name"). Toponymy is itself a branch of onomastics, the study of names of all kinds. Toponymy is distinct from (though often confused with) etymology, which is the study of the origins of words.

Die Toponomastik, auch Toponymie (von griech. , , „Ort“ und , , „Name“), deutsch Ortsnamenkunde beziehungsweise Ortsnamenforschung, beschäftigt sich als Teilgebiet der allgemeinen Namenforschung und der Sprachgeographie  mit allen Toponymen oder Örtlichkeitsnamen (Ortsnamen im allgemeinen Sinne).

La toponymie est la science qui étudie les noms de lieux (toponymes). Elle se propose de rechercher leur signification, leur étymologie, mais aussi leurs transformations au fil des siècles. Avec l'anthroponymie (étude des noms de personnes), elle fait partie de l'onomastique (étude des noms propres), elle-même branche de la linguistique. Le nom des habitants découlant des toponymes est l'ethnonyme ou le gentilé.
