A tool or device is a piece of equipment which typically provides a mechanical advantage in accomplishing a physical task, or provides an ability that is not naturally available to the user of a tool. The most basic tools are simple machines. For example, a crowbar simply functions as a lever. The further out from the pivot point, the more force is transmitted along the lever. When particularly intended for domestic use, a tool is often called a utensil.

Un outil est un instrument utilisé par un être vivant directement ou par le truchement d'une machine afin d'exercer une action le plus souvent mécanique ou thermique sur un élément d'environnement à traiter (matière brute, objet fini ou semi-fini, être vivant, etc). Il améliore l'efficacité des actions entreprises ou donne accès à des actions impossibles autrement. Beaucoup procurent un avantage mécanique en fonctionnant selon le principe d'une machine simple comme par exemple le pied-de-biche qui exploite le principe du levier.

Tool est un groupe de metal progressif américain formé en avril 1991 par le chanteur Maynard James Keenan, le guitariste Adam Jones, le bassiste Paul d'Amour et le batteur Danny Carey. Paul d'Amour quitte le groupe en 1995, et est remplacé par Justin Chancellor du groupe britannique Peach peu de temps avant l'enregistrement de leur troisième œuvre majeure, Ænima. Ce groupe emprunte au heavy metal sa puissance, au rock progressif sa charge d'émotions et au rock psychédélique la capacité de créer une atmosphère pleine et envoutante. Tool est un groupe à part. Sa musique, souvent très sombre, n'est pas dénuée d'optimisme.

Ein Werkzeug ist ein Hilfsmittel, um Gegenstände (Werkstücke oder Materialien im weitesten Sinne) zu manipulieren, im Gegensatz zur werkzeuglosen, rein manuellen Bearbeitung.Schon natürliche Gegenstände wie Steine oder Äste werden von Menschen und auch vielen Tieren als Werkzeuge verwendet. Die gezielte Werkzeugherstellung (z. B. Anspitzen eines Astes zur Verwendung als Spieß) beherrschen neben dem Menschen nur wenige  Primaten und Vogelarten.Die Bearbeitung eines Werkstücks erfolgt durch ein Werkzeug, das aber wiederum durch ein Tier, einen Menschen oder eine Maschine geführt werden muss. Eine Maschine, die eigenständig eine Bearbeitung ausführt, kann also nicht als Werkzeug bezeichnet werden, wobei sich die Begrifflichkeiten überlappen, denn eine komplexe Maschine kann durchaus als Werkzeug eingesetzt werden.

Narzędzie to urządzenie służące do bezpośredniego oddziaływania w procesie pracy na przedmiot pracy stanowiące wyposażenie człowieka lub maszyny. Większość prostych narzędzi jest maszynami prostymi. Narzędzie pozwala wykonać to, czego przeciętny człowiek nie byłby w stanie wykonać "gołymi rękami" lub ułatwia to, co może wykonać sam. Narzędziami posługują się też niektóre gatunki zwierząt.
