tonic (music)

The tonic is the first note of a musical scale, and in the tonal method of musical composition it is extremely important. The triad formed on the tonic note, the tonic chord, is thus the most important chord. More generally, the tonic is the pitch upon which all other pitches of a piece are hierarchically centered.

Dans la musique tonale, la tonique désigne le degré fondamental, ou note principale, d'une tonalité, et ce, quel que soit le mode — majeur ou mineur — de la gamme prise en considération. La tonique donne son nom à la tonalité qui lui est associée : la note do est la tonique de la « tonalité de do ».

Tonika (frz. tonique; tonisch zu griech. tonos = Spannung) ist die Bezeichnung für den Grundton einer Tonleiter sowie den Dreiklang auf dieser ersten Stufe.Der Name Tonika geht auf den von Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683–1764) erdachten Begriff „l'accord tonique“ zurück, mit dem dieser das wesentliche Merkmal der Tonika zu umschreiben suchte, nämlich ihre Fähigkeit, wie ein Magnet im Zentrum aller harmonischen Spannungsfelder zu stehen, weil ihr Grundton mit dem Grundton der jeweiligen Tonart identisch ist.

Tonika (w skrócie T) – podstawowy dźwięk każdej gamy, a także akord zbudowany na tym dźwięku. Tonika jest pierwszym, a zarazem i ostatnim (ósmym), dźwiękiem gamy. Od niej także gama bierze swoją nazwę. Rolą toniki jest uszeregowanie pozostałych dźwięków gamy według schematu dla odpowiedniej skali. In de muziek is de tonica de grondtoon van een toonladder, of het grondtoonakkoord van de toonsoort.In tonale muziek is de tonica meestal het eerste en het laatste  akkoord van een compositie (zie cadens).Tonica is echter ook een benaming voor een akkoord dat zogezegd "rust" uitstraalt (zie ook subdominant en dominant; deze akkoorden bevatten respectievelijk een beetje en veel spanning). Het tonica-akkoord heeft uiteraard een tonicafunctie, maar ook de derde graad (III) heeft deze, wanneer een ander akkoord met tonica-functie deze derde graad voorafgaat. Het derde grondakkoord met tonicafunctie is de zesde graad (VI). Het is een uitbreiding van de eerste graad, maar het wordt ook vaak zelfstandig gebruikt, of als einde van de bedrieglijke cadens.
