Die lateinische Bezeichnung (Plural) lautet Digiti pedis und bedeutet "Finger des Fußes", die deutsche Bezeichnung geht wohl auf das indogermanische deik (Zeiger) zurück. Wie jeder Finger besitzt auch jede Zehe einen Nagel. Der Mensch besitzt normalerweise an jedem Fuß fünf Zehen. Die größte Zehe (Großzehe, Hallux) befindet sich hierbei innen, die kleinste Zehe (Kleinzehe, Digitus minimus) außen am Fuß.
