Tinnitus (IPA pronunciation: or , from the Latin word for "ringing") is the perception of sound in the human ear in the absence of corresponding external sound(s). Tinnitus can be perceived in one or both ears or in the head. It is usually described as a ringing noise, but in some patients it takes the form of a high pitched whining, buzzing, hissing, humming, or whistling sound, or as ticking, clicking, roaring, "crickets" or "locusts", tunes, songs, or beeping. It has also been described as a "whooshing" sound, as of wind or waves.

L'acouphène est une impression auditive correspondant à la perception d'un son. Il s'agit de sensations sonores qui ne sont pas liées à une onde acoustique extérieure, c'est-à-dire qui sont seulement perçues par le sujet. Le son perçu ressemble à un bourdonnement, un sifflement ou même à un tintement ressenti dans le crâne ou dans l'oreille interne, d'un seul côté ou des deux. Il existe deux types d'acouphènes : l'acouphène objectif et l'acouphène subjectif.

Der Begriff Tinnitus aurium (lat. „das Klingeln der Ohren“) oder kurz Tinnitus bezeichnet ein Symptom (teilweise wird auch von einem Syndrom gesprochen), bei dem der Betroffene Geräusche wahrnimmt, die keine äußere für andere Personen wahrnehmbare Quelle besitzen. Im Gegensatz dazu beruht der „objektive Tinnitus“ auf einer von außen wahrnehmbaren oder zumindest messbaren Schallquelle. Objektiver Tinnitus ist allerdings im Vergleich zum subjektiven Tinnitus sehr selten.

Per acufene (tinnitus in latino e inglese) si intende quel disturbo costituito da rumori che, sotto diversa forma (fischi, ronzii, fruscii, crepitii, soffi, pulsazioni ecc.) vengono percepiti in un orecchio, in entrambi o in generale nella testa e che possono risultare fastidiosi a tal punto da influire sulla qualità della vita di chi ne soffre. Si originano all'interno dell' apparato uditivo ma, alla loro prima comparsa vengono illusoriamente percepiti come suoni provenienti dall'ambiente esterno.

Tinnitus of oorsuizen is het horen van sis-, fluit-, brom- of pieptonen in één of beide oren. De waarneming wordt door de lijder gedaan maar niet door anderen (95%). Het waargenomen geluid kan zo luid zijn dat het horen wordt belemmerd. De naam komt van het Latijnse Tinnitus Aurium, wat 'gerinkel in de oren' betekent.
