Thrash metal is a extreme, subgenre of heavy metal that is characterized usually by its fast tempo and aggression. Songs of the genre typically use fast percussive and low-register guitar riffs, overlaid with shredding-style lead work. Lyrics of thrash metal songs often deal with social issues, often using direct and denunciatory language, an approach which partially overlaps with the hardcore genre. The "Big Four" bands of thrash metal are Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax who simultaneously created and popularized the genre in the early 1980s.

Mais c'est au début des années 1980 que Metallica popularisa le genre. Le thrash metal est notamment caractérisé par une musique rapide et violente. Le mot thrash signifie « battre, frapper » en anglais, à ne pas confondre avec trash, qui signifie « poubelle ».

Thrash metal (av engelska thrash, "piska", "prygla") är en hårdare och ofta snabbare variant av heavy metal som uppstod då hardcorepunk blandades in i musiken. Fuzja tych dwóch gatunków dała w efekcie bardzo szybkie i brutalne kompozycje charakteryzujące się (początkowo) prostymi aranżacjami, agresywnym wokalem, dźwięcznymi solówkami oraz częstymi zmianami rytmu, jak i perkusji przełamującej rytm.
