Third gender
The terms third gender and third sex describe individuals who are considered to be neither women nor men, as well as the social category present in those societies who recognize three or more
genders. The state of being neither
male nor
female may be understood in relation to the individual's
sex,
gender role,
gender identity or
sexual orientation. To different cultures or individuals, a third sex or gender may represent an intermediate state between men and women, a state of being both (such as "the spirit of a man in the body of a woman"), the state of being neither (
neuter), the ability to cross or swap genders, or another category altogether independent of male and female. This last definition is favored by those who argue for a strict interpretation of the "third gender" concept.

Geschlecht wurde und wird zu verschiedenen Zeiten und von verschiedenen Gruppen unterschiedliches bezeichnet. Neben reinen Zählungen in veralteten Bezeichnungen der Biologie bei der weiteren Unterteilungen von
Arten oder der
Genealogie bei der Zählung von
Generationen ist allen anderen gemein, dass damit Personen gemeint waren, welche entweder biologisch oder sozial als nicht zum binären Geschlechtssystem zugehörig angesehen wurden oder werden, beziehungsweise sich selbst so fühlen.

Terzo sesso
Il concetto di terzo sesso (in
tedesco drittes Geschlecht), definito anche
uranismo, è stato coniato dal
militante omosessuale Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, che era convinto del fatto che l'
omosessualità fosse una variante della sessualità umana consistente in una posizione intermedia fra il primo polo costituito dal sesso femminile e il secondo polo costituito dal sesso maschile. Quello omosessuale, a suo dire, era un vero e proprio terzo polo, il "terzo sesso", appunto, che la scienza non era ancora stata capace di riconoscere come tale.
