A thermoplastic is a plastic that melts to a liquid when heated and freezes to a brittle, very glassy state when cooled sufficiently. Most thermoplastics are high molecular weight polymers whose chains associate through weak van der Waals forces (polyethylene); stronger dipole-dipole interactions and hydrogen bonding (nylon); or even stacking of aromatic rings (polystyrene). Thermoplastic polymers differ from thermosetting polymers (Bakelite; vulcanized rubber) as they can, unlike thermosetting polymers, be remelted and remoulded. Many thermoplastic materials are addition polymers; e.g., vinyl chain-growth polymers such as polyethylene and polypropylene.

Thermoplaste (Singular: der) sind Kunststoffe, die sich in einem bestimmten Temperaturbereich einfach (thermo-plastisch) verformen lassen. Dieser Vorgang ist reversibel, das heißt er kann durch Abkühlung und Wiedererwärmung bis in den schmelzflüssigen Zustand beliebig oft wiederholt werden, solange nicht durch Überhitzung die sog. thermische Zersetzung des Materials einsetzt. Darin unterscheiden sich Thermoplaste von den Duroplasten und Elastomeren.

Een thermoplast is een materiaal van kunststof dat bij sterke verhitting zacht wordt. Dit in tegenstelling tot thermoharder, materialen die hard blijven als ze verhit worden.Deze materiaalgroep bestaat uit lineaire macromoleculen zonder dwarsverbindingen (hoewel soms een zekere vertakking kan optreden). In de moleculen zijn de bindingen covalent en sterk, terwijl de moleculen onderling slechts gebonden zijn door Van der Waalsbindingen. Deze laatste verbreken bij opwarmen.

Полимеры-термопласты могут иметь линейное или разветвленное строение, быть аморфными (полистирол, полиметилметакрилат) либо кристаллическими (полиэтилен, полипропилен). В отличие от реактопластов для термопластов характерно отсутствие трёхмерной сшитой структуры и переход в текучее состояние, что делает возможным термоформовку, литьё и экструзию изделий из них.

Un termoplástico es un plástico el cual, a temperatura ambiente es plástico o deformable, se derrite a un liquido cuando es calentado y se endurece en un estado vitreo cuando es suficientemente enfriado. La mayoría de los termoplasticos son polimeros de alto peso molecular, los que poseen cadenas asociadas por medio de débiles fuerzas Van der Waals (Polietileno); fuertes interacciones dipolo-dipolo y enlace de hidrógeno; o incluso anillos aromaticos apilados (poliestireno). Los polimeros termoplasticos difieren de los polimeros termoestables en que despues de calentarse y moldearse estos pueden recalentarse y formar otros objetos, ya que en el caso de los termoestables o termoduros, su forma despues de enfriarse no cambia y este prefiere incendiarse..
