Theory
The English word theory was derived from a technical term in philosophy in Ancient Greek. The word theoria, , meant "a looking at, viewing, beholding", and referring to contemplation or speculation, as opposed to action. Theory is especially often contrasted to "practice" (from Greek , πρᾶξις) a Greek term for "doing", which is opposed to theory because theory involved no doing apart from itself.

Theorie
Eine Theorie ist ein vereinfachtes Bild eines Ausschnitts der Realität, der mit diesem Bild beschrieben und erklärt werden soll, um auf dieser Grundlage möglicherweise Prognosen zu machen und Handlungsempfehlungen zu geben. Jeder Theorie liegen mehr oder weniger deutlich ausformulierte Annahmen zugrunde. Es lassen sich Alltagstheorien und wissenschaftliche Theorien unterscheiden. Letztere unterscheiden sich von ersteren durch höheren Grad an Bewusstheit, ausdrückliche Formulierung, größeren Umfang und meist durch die Einbeziehung von systematischer Beobachtung, die der Prüfung der Theorien dient (empirische Prüfung). Im folgenden geht es primär um wissenschaftliche Theorien.

Une théorie (du grec theorein, « contempler, observer, examiner ») désigne couramment une idée ou une connaissance spéculative, souvent basée sur l’observation ou l’expérience, donnant une représentation idéale, éloignée des applications.

Teori
Teori är en vetenskaplig term med flera olika betydelser:
- Vetenskap: Komplex vetenskaplig slutsats och förklaringsmodell, alternativt system av desamma, till exempel Einsteins relativitetsteorier eller gravitationsteorin. I motsats till i dagligt tal används ordet "teori" inom vetenskapen inte som en nära synonym till ordet "gissning", utan en teori är tvärtom den starkaste sannolikhetsgrad som kan nås inom vetenskapen.
- Logik: Antingen en uppsättning axiom eller mängden av alla teorem som följer ur en viss axiomuppsättning. Teorin för en modell är mängden av alla satser som är sanna i modellen.
- Vardagligt: Tankemässigt förklaringsförsök utan förankring i verkligheten, kunskap som är hämtad ur böcker, motsatsen till praktik. Exempel: "Det där fungerar bara i teorin, inte i praktiken."

Teoria
Teoria to system pojęć, definicji, aksjomatów i twierdzeń ustalających relacje między tymi pojęciami i aksjomatami, tworzący spójny system pojęciowy opisujący jakąś wybraną fizyczną lub abstrakcyjną dziedzinę.
Teoria naukowa - uporządkowany według paradygmatów naukowych zbiór/system zdań orzekających o badanej przez daną naukę dziedzinie rzeczywistości w taki sposób że może być eksperymentalnie lub logicznie weryfikowalny, innymi słowy, musi być falsyfikowalna. Teorie naukowe należą do wiedzy naukowej.
W przypadku nauk przyrodniczych, inżynieryjnych i nauk humanistycznych teorie są tworzone w celu systematyzowania i racjonalizowania faktów, wyjaśniania powodów ich występowania, przewidywania przyszłych zdarzeń, oraz budowy nowych systemów/urządzeń/broni.
